adjacent, contiguous
In exact usage, adjacent means "lying near," "close at hand," "neighboring," and contiguous means "touching," "in actual contact." Beads strung loosely are adjacent; if strung tightly, they are contiguous. In general usage, however, the words are interchangeable. Adjacent, much the more commonly used word, has these approximate synonyms: adjoining, abutting, bordering, connecting, and juxtaposed.
